Ways to help our kids regulate their emotions

We all experience emotions – feelings like love, fear, happiness, anger, jealousy, joy and frustration. For our kids, learning how to regulate their emotions is an important part of their development.  

What is emotional regulation? 

Emotional regulation refers to the process we use to influence which emotions we have, when we have them, and how we experience and express our feelings. Emotional regulation can be automatic or controlled, conscious or unconscious. 

Emotional regulation strategies for kids

It’s important our kids develop skills to regulate their emotions. Apart from immediate benefits of feeling better in difficult or challenging situations, emotional regulation skills can also positively impact their overall sense of wellbeing, their engagement with school and learning, their friendships and social interactions, and their sense of belonging and connection.
