Ways to help kids regulate emotions

We all experience emotions – feelings like love, fear, happiness, anger, jealousy, joy and frustration. It’s important that we looks for ways to help kids regulate emotions and support this part of their development.

What is emotional regulation? 

Emotional regulation refers to the process we use to influence our emotions.

Emotional regulation affects a range of emotional factors including:

  • the type of feelings we have
  • when we have particular feelings
  • how we experience and express our feelings

This process can be automatic or controlled, conscious or unconscious. 

Emotional regulation strategies for kids

It’s important our kids develop skills to regulate their emotions. Emotional regulation has a range of immediate and long-term benefits, and these can all have far-reaching impacts on wellbeing as a child matures into an adult:

  • Feeling better in difficult or challenging situations (Immediate)
  • Positively impact their overall sense of wellbeing (Longterm)
  • Positive engagement with school and learning (Longterm)
  • Enrich their friendships and social interactions (Longterm)
  • Strengthen their sense of belonging and connection (Longterm)
