The five minute reset: simple habits that fit between farm jobs

Life in the bush is busy. There is always work to do, and days can feel long and hard.

When you are busy, it can be hard to look after yourself. But Quentin, one of our psychologists, says small breaks can really help. “After all, we’re happy to let a mob of sheep or cattle have a blow on the way to the yards, and we let them do the same before we start drafting,” says Quentin. “Taking a break is good for our stock, so it makes sense that it’s good for us as well.”

“Most people think wellbeing needs big changes,” Quentin says. “But small resets done often help your mind and body stay steady.”

A reset is a short break that helps you calm your body and clear your mind. It only takes a few minutes. You can do it while you work.

Try a quick reset when you:

  • Sit in the ute before driving
  • Wait for a trough or tank to fill
  • Check a gate, fence, pump, or generator
  • Pause at the workbench before the next job
  • Wait for the kettle to boil or the microwave to ding

Easy resets you can try:

  • Take three slow breaths. Let your shoulders relax each time you breathe out.
  • Try sighing – it’s our body’s natural reset button. Short breath in, then long breath out.
  • Stretch your back or arms while you wait for machinery or stock.
  • Notice the ground under your boots to bring your mind back into your body.
  • Name three good things that have happened today.

“These tiny moments help your body switch out of high alert,” Quentin says. “You think more clearly and feel less worn out.”

He also says, “You wouldn’t run machinery flat out all day without checking the gauges. Your mind’s no different.”

You don’t need a long break. You just need small moments during your day. These small habits can help you stay steady and ready to tackle the next job.
